Ben's Legacy Foundation is a registered non-profit organization formed in 2023. Our mission is to change the stigma surrounding suicide and addiction and to be a support to individuals, families and the communities affected by either. With the opioid crisis going on, and the mental health challenges of today we feel this is more important than ever.
In August of 2023, we held the first annual Sonshine Festival. We brought together musicians, artists and people of many talents to memorialize Benjamin Burger lost to us in March 2022. With the support of many local businesses and organizations as well as Moms Stop the Harm, The Canadian Drug Policy Coalition and the Calgary Centre for Suicide Prevention, the festival raised awareness and provided information and education in a safe and inspiring setting.
In the coming years, along with supporting independent artists and musicians, we are raising money to build a healing lodge on-site to make a permanent home for our bereavement support group and as a place to host retreats and workshops such as ASIST (suicide first aid) training.
Please reach out if you are interested in joining our Healing Hearts group in Faust, AB.
We are a peer support group that was founded to help provide sources of help compassion and most of all understanding for families or individuals who have had a loved one die as a result of substance use or addiction. Many of us have struggled alongside our loved ones as they fought this illness, but this battle is one that we and our loved ones ultimately lost. This loss was often unaccepted by others as being worthy of compassion. They did not understand. But those of us who have experienced this kind of disenfranchised loss, we do understand. We share an experience, and through this experience, a bond. This bond is an unwanted one but, as such, it is all the stronger.
